MLK weekend is the first big ski weekend of the new year and usually the coldest, which at Snowshoe means the best snow: mid-January is when the snowmaking and the natural stuff finally agree. It is a three-day weekend for most families, so the mountain fills, the Village is busy, and the homes go months ahead.
Our advice every year is the same. Book the Sunday night too. Monday on the hill after the weekend crowd drives home is the best ski day of the trip, and the drive back Monday evening is empty. Ski-in first for this one: 305 Soaring Eagle and 1208 Silver Creek skip the shuttle line entirely. Then the Timbers cabins for a private hot tub after a day in the single digits.
It is cold. Real cold, wind on the lift, summit ten to fifteen degrees colder than the valley. Pack for it and read the mountain report before you leave; it is the live summit forecast, not your phone's default city.

What to know

- Lift tickets are cheaper online ahead and can sell out on a holiday weekend. Buy them once the home is booked.
