Trout Rivers Near Snowshoe: The Best Season for Each

By Austin 4 min read

If you are planning a fly fishing trip near Snowshoe, timing matters almost as much as which river you pick. Pocahontas County sits on some of the best trout water in the East, and within about 90 minutes of the mountain you have six rivers that each peak in a different month. Here is how we think about planning a trip around them.

Trout rivers near Snowshoe, by season

Each river below has its own personality, drive time, and best window. None of this is a guess, it comes straight from our fly fishing guide, built from what local anglers and guides tell us season after season.

Upper Elk River, Slaty Fork

Just 10 to 25 minutes from the mountain, this is the closest real trout water to Snowshoe. It is a spring fed limestone stream holding wild rainbows and browns, and the Slaty Fork section is permanent catch and release, artificial lures and flies only. Best months are April through June, with a second window in October. March, July, August, September, and November are still good. Winter catch and release fishing is allowed here too.

Shavers Fork of the Cheat

About 20 to 45 minutes away, Shavers Fork is one of the highest trout rivers in the eastern United States. It gets stocked both spring and fall on top of a genuine wild population, with a delayed harvest stretch near Cheat Bridge. Prime months run May through early July, then September and October. April and August are good too, and winter catch and release is an option.

Greenbrier River

A 25 to 45 minute drive gets you to bigger, slower water. This one is less about trout and more about smallmouth bass through the summer, June to September is prime. May and October are still good. The rail trail runs right alongside it, so this is the river for a bike and fish kind of day.

Williams River

Further out at 45 to 70 minutes, the Williams is a freestone stream in the national forest, right below the Highland Scenic Highway. It gets stocked weekly in spring and has a year round catch and release stretch below Tea Creek. Prime months are March through May, then October. June and September are good, and winter catch and release fishing is allowed.

Cranberry River

The one serious anglers ask us about. It is a 60 to 90 minute drive into the Cranberry Wilderness, with long catch and release sections and native brook trout up the feeder streams. This is backcountry water, and April through June is prime. March, July, September, and October are good secondary windows.

Cherry River

Also 60 to 90 minutes out, with two forks above Richwood. It is stocked heavily and easy to reach from the road, which makes it a good first river if someone in your group is new to fly fishing. Prime months are March through May, with June and October as good backups.

Planning the trip

A few things make a fishing trip near Snowshoe go smoothly:

  • Buy your West Virginia fishing license and trout stamp online before you leave home. Anyone 15 or older needs both to fish for trout.
  • Decide how far you want to drive. The Elk and Shavers Fork are both under 45 minutes and easy to fit around a half day. The Cranberry and Williams are a bigger commitment, closer to a full day out.
  • If this is anyone's first time on these rivers, consider a guide. Wild fish on water like the Elk are not easy, and a morning with someone who knows the river beats a weekend of guessing.
  • Check the season. Spring brings fresh stocking and high water, early summer and fall are quieter with clearer water, and several of these rivers allow catch and release fishing even in winter.

Our full fly fishing guide covers licenses, guide options, and gear in more detail, worth a look before you lock in dates.

Where to stay for a fishing trip

If fishing is the main reason for your trip, we always point guests toward our two cabins, Timbers 3 and Timbers 5. Both have a private hot tub to soak in after a long day on the water, a full kitchen for cooking up whatever you catch (or didn't), a grill, and space outside to deal with waders and rods without tracking the river through the house. They also sit about ten minutes closer to the Elk than the Village does, and the quiet South Mountain neighborhood is an easy place to get a good night's sleep before an early start.

If your group is splitting time between the river and the mountain itself, any of our homes works well as a base, and booking direct at /book-direct means you are in touch with us directly the whole time, not a call center.

We would love to help you plan the trip. Come fish Pocahontas County this season, the water is waiting.
