Seneca Rocks: A Day Trip from Snowshoe

By Austin 3 min read

If you are staying with us at Snowshoe and want one real day trip off the mountain, make it Seneca Rocks. This is one of West Virginia's most recognizable landmarks, a 900-foot quartzite formation rising straight out of the Germany Valley, and it is close enough to fit into a single day without rushing.

Planning the drive to Seneca Rocks from Snowshoe

Seneca Rocks is about 60 to 75 minutes from Snowshoe. It is an easy day trip: head out after breakfast, hike in the morning while the trail is cool and quiet, and you are back on the mountain in time for dinner. Check our mountain report before you leave so you know what the roads and weather look like, and grab gas on the way down since there is no gas station on the mountain itself.

The trailhead is the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center, 13 Roy Gap Rd. The Discovery Center also has trail information and a small indoor climbing wall, worth a few minutes before or after your hike.

The hike to the overlook

The trail itself is 2.6 miles round trip with about 700 feet of elevation gain, and it takes most hikers 1.5 to 2 hours. It is rated hard, but do not let that scare you off. Steps and switchbacks climb steadily the whole way, and the grading is good enough, with benches along the route, that most fitness levels can do it at their own pace.

What makes the climb worth it is the view. It opens up down the Germany Valley the entire way, not just at the top, so you get payoff from the first switchback on. The trail ends at an observation platform below the true summit, and that platform is the turnaround point for hikers.

A few things to know before you go:

  • Wear real shoes. The steps and switchbacks are steady work, not a casual stroll.
  • Bring water. There is no water source on the trail.
  • Budget the full 1.5 to 2 hours so you are not rushing the view.
  • Stop at the platform. The scramble beyond it is technical climbing, covered next.

Climbing with a guide

The hiking trail ends at the observation platform. Getting from there to the true summit of Seneca Rocks is technical rock climbing, not hiking, and it is not something to attempt without the right gear and experience.

If climbing to the top is the trip you are after, two outfitters guide it right from the Discovery Center: Seneca Rocks Mountain Guides and the Seneca Rocks Climbing School. Both are based at the Discovery Center, so you can book a guided climb and start from the same parking area as the hike. This is the way to safely reach the summit, and it turns a good hike into a real adventure.

Making a full day of it

Seneca Rocks pairs naturally with the rest of your Snowshoe trip. If you want more hiking closer to the mountain, our hiking guide covers the easy Shavers Lake Trail loop and the climb to the historic fire tower at the resort, both good options for the days you do not want to drive. And if Seneca Rocks has you in the mood for more day trips off the mountain, our off the mountain guide rounds up waterfalls, state parks, and the essentials for getting around Pocahontas County.

A few packing notes for the day: bring layers, since the valley and the ridge can feel different temperatures, and bring a camera. The view down the Germany Valley is the kind you will want to remember.

Where to stay for a Seneca Rocks day trip

Any of our homes work well as a base, since Seneca Rocks is a drive no matter which neighborhood you are in. If you want a quiet home to come back to after a long day on your feet, Timbers 3 has a private hot tub that is exactly what tired legs want after 2.6 miles of steps and switchbacks.
