1 · Where to stay

A group this size takes two homes

Our biggest homes sleep 12. For 24, book two or more side by side: Timbers 3 and Timbers 5 sit across the street from each other (12 and 12), and the three Summit condos share one area (103C, 107D, and 202D). How group stays work.

Not open for all of these nights: 305 Soaring Eagle (booked). Not yet released means the dates have not opened on our calendar; text us for first look.

Prices on each home's page are live for your dates. Book direct and your plan comes with you into your Guest Lounge.

2 · The mountain this week

Fall closure: what is open

  • Fall color drives on the Highland Scenic Highway (until the seasonal gate closes)
  • Hiking, fly fishing, Cass Scenic Railroad and the Durbin Rocket into late fall
  • The Rink and Adventure Playground at Mountain Lodge
  • Some Village restaurants on reduced hours (call ahead)
  • Closed: All lifts, the Bike Park, and Shavers Lake activities
  • Closed: Raven Golf Club after early to mid-October
  • Closed: Most Village shops and several restaurants

Typical weather for your dates

Over the last 10 years, these dates averaged highs near 49° and lows around 32° at the summit, with rain on about 1 of the 2 days. The warmest year ran highs near 65°, the coolest near 39°.

3 · On the mountain that week

No big events on your dates

Nothing on our event calendar for these dates, which usually means a calmer mountain. The event calendar has the full year.

4 · Dinners, chefs, and groceries

Eat well without the scramble

The day-by-day plan below puts a few dinners out at kitchens we know are open for your dates. Book tables ahead on weekends and holidays.

A chef who will drive up the mountain usually needs two to four weeks of notice.

The grocery stop on your route

  1. 1

    Kroger or Walmart Supercenter, Elkins

Your last full grocery store. About 1 hour 15 minutes before the mountain. Do the big shop here.

  2. 2

    Dollar General, Slaty Fork

The most real store near the base for pantry staples, paper goods, and snacks.

  3. 3

    Par Mar, Slaty Fork

Fill the tank here. There is no gas on the mountain. Ice, firewood, beer, and forgotten basics, open late.

  4. 4

    Wildcat Grocery, the Village

A short drive or shuttle ride from your home. Basics and top-ups at resort prices.

5 · Day by day

Your days on the mountain

Pick a home above (Plan around this home) and the days tailor to its lift, hot tub, and parking.

Fall closure: The Bike Park has closed and the ski lifts are not yet turning. Peak leaf color, empty trails, and lower rates on our homes. Most Village restaurants are closed or on short hours, so call ahead; hiking and fly fishing are open, and the Rink and Adventure Playground run year-round.

Arrival · Friday, October 30

Arrive and settle in

  1. On the drive

Grocery stop before the mountain: Kroger or Walmart in Elkins from the north, Marlinton IGA from the south

The full groceries are in Marlinton (30 to 40 minutes) or Elkins (about an hour), so stock up on the way in.

  2. Check in

    Settle in at your home

Your door code and arrival notes come in your check-in message and your Guest Lounge once you book.

  3. Evening

Dinner at Elk River Inn & Restaurant, in Slatyfork

A gourmet, health-conscious menu with a pub-style bar in Slatyfork; also runs guided fly-fishing trips. About 25-30 min away. Hours: Dinner service limited outside ski season, call ahead to confirm. First night, no cooking after the drive.

Day 2 · Saturday, October 31

Hike day

  1. Morning

    Hike: Seneca Rocks Hiking Trail

Hard. 2.6 miles. 60-75 min from the mountain. Steps and switchbacks climb to an observation platform near the summit of Seneca Rocks.

  2. Afternoon

Skating at The Rink, Mountain Lodge

Indoor rink, so the weather does not matter. Hours: Daily, 50-min sessions, first at 10am, last at 7pm.

  3. Evening

    Dinner is open tonight

Cook in, or pick from the where-to-eat guide; it carries the hours we have for the Village kitchens.

Checkout · Sunday, November 1

Checkout day

  1. Morning

Pack up and run the checkout list

It is short, and it is in your Guest Lounge once you book. Leave it the way you found it and the return code follows.

  2. On the way down

One last stop: coffee or lunch in Marlinton or Elkins

Heading south: The Dirt Bean in Marlinton (Mon-Tue 7am-3pm, Wed-Sat 7am-7pm, closed Sun). Heading north: Beander's Restaurant & Tavern in Elkins (Kitchen: Mon-Thu 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat 12pm-12am; closed Sun).
